Here are some additional tools to enable web publication and shared scholarship of 3D and complex, high-resolution data sets, in addition to the CHER-Ob project at Yale that Eleni Kotoula mentioned in the previous post:
ARIADNE Visual Media Service: http://visual.ariadne-infrastructure.eu/
Archaeological Data Service: http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/archives/
Both of these sites are based on the 3D Heritage Online Presenter (3DHOP) developed by the Visual Computing Lab (CNR-ISTI), who, as Carla noted, also developed Meshlab and the RTIViewer.
Along with the free RTI Mobile App, there are lots of new tools being developed for data sharing and scholarship.
