Example of 2D way of showing RTI results

There are a number of ways to include RTI results in powerpoint and published papers. One way we use a lot at CHI is to make a "split image" where we show part of the image using the default view, and part with some rendering mode. The example I attached here is a detail of an enamel triptych from the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. It is by Penicaud and is titled "Scenes of the Life of Christ" 1520-1525 dimensions 8 7/8 x 3 in // 8 7/8 x 6 in // 8 7/8 x 3 in. The surface exhibits "glass disease" formed by impurities in the glass that form salts over time. It is worse in some colors than others.

 

There are many ways to make images like this, but I'll share a couple of tips on how I do it. I find that it's important to keep the light angle the same for both (or more) images. That way it looks more natural when you put them together. I find a light angle I like and then take a snapshot in default mode, and in this case in specular enhancement with no color. The most useful tip is to "load files into layers" from the tools menu in bridge (tools -> Photohop -> Load files into layers) Once these are in layers, use the "polygonal lasso tool" to draw an area. Then right click and choose "layer via cut." Now you can turn on and off the layers that you created to get the result you want. Flatten the image and save.
